JOB GOAL:
To develop in each pupil an awareness of the role of science in economic and social progress; to motivate each pupil to acquire knowledge of scientific facts and principles, and skills in scientific methods of problem solving; to discover and develop special talents of pupils in scientific fields.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general science, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, physiology or science problems to Middle and/or High School pupils, utilizing the state competencies and curriculum/bilingual curriculum adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instruct pupils in citizenship, expected student behavior and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Plan a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student experiences, organize laboratory activities for optimal learning.
- Demonstrate scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher-prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aides.
- Provide individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously.
- Instruct pupils in proper use, care, and sage handling of chemicals, science equipment, and plant and animal life.
- Provide for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment and tools. Make minor adjustments and request repairs to equipment as required.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior for a productive learning environment during class sessions, laboratory sessions, and field trips.
- Evaluate each pupil’s growth in knowledge, skills, and scientific attitudes in courses being taught.
- Select and request books, instructional aides, science, equipment, chemicals and supplies, and maintain inventory records as required.

- Maintain professional competencies through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Identify pupil’s needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
- Participate in curriculum alignment, bench marks, performance standards/assessments and revisions, inclusive of bilingual development programs and implements EPSS.
- Gather data in order to develop strategies for student improvement.
- Assist pupils in selection and development of individual research projects.
- Cooperate with school administration in providing science displays, and programs for the school and community and in sponsoring science activities.
- Communicate with parents bi-weekly, monthly or sooner if the need arises, on student’s progress and behavior.
- Supervise pupils in and out of classroom activities as assigned.
- Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities, to include, in and out of school activities.
- Participate cooperatively with the principal or his/her designee to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
- Implement teacher competencies adopted by the Board of Education.
- Administer Group Standardized Tests in accordance with district testing program.
- Administer language assessment testing and scoring in both English and Spanish.
- Attend board meetings at the request of the superintendent or his/her authorized designee.
- Perform other assigned tasks required by the supervisor(s).
