QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. B.S. degree with a major or minor in library Science.
  2. New Mexico state teaching certificate with library science endorsement K-12.

 

REPORTS TO:  Principal when at the school. The Library Services Coordinator during assigned times.

JOB GOAL:      To provide staff and students with a wide variety and range of library media and

                        Services that will encourage intellectual growth to aid staff and students in

                        Acquiring the skills needed to become effective life-time library users.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Operates and supervises the library to which assigned.
  2. Understands and follows oral and written directive.
  3. Maintains open communication and cordial public relations with media, staff, teachers, administrators, sales representatives and others.
  4. Provides training for the library assistants to carry out their responsibilities.
  5. Arranges frequently changing book fairs, audio visual showings, library displays, bulletin boards, other promotional activities, and exhibits likely to interest library users.
  6. Oversees the general neatness and attractiveness of the library and its displays
  7. Prepares and administers the library budget.
  8. Direct and assists in the production of media.
  9. Catalogs, maintains, and supervises the operation of audio visual hardware.
  10. Keeps library materials and equipment in working order.
  11. Eliminates obsolete and work materials from the collections.
  12. Makes repairs on library media: books, periodicals, audio-visual software, hardware and other media.
  13. Takes the annual inventory or library materials and prepares lists of missing media to be discarded.
  14. Maintains current inventory of supplies.
  15. Operates the circulation desk and keeps circulation files.
  16. Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new library media.
  17. Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional media, and makes library media available to supplement the instructional program.
  18. Supervises the clerical routines necessary for the smooth operation of the library.
  19. Insures that books and other media are selected according to need and suitability using recommended selection tools, maintains order file, organizes them for use.
  20. Insures that all media is properly shelved.
  21. Prepares magazines for the bindery, processes and shelves them.
  22. Supervises the maintenance of filing of catalog cards, vertical file material, publishers catalogs, shelf list cards, maps, pictures, periodicals.
  23. Maintains the library media processing center’s system for cataloging all library media, and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.
  24. Maintains a broad and adequate collection of media, books, periodicals, newspapers, audio-visual aids, reference collection, professional collection, and southwest collection to meet school needs.
  25. Cooperates with the administration, faculty, and staff in the establishment of the library as an integral part of the total education program.
  26. Keeps informed and up to date on the trends and practices of library media.
  27. Participates in in-service workshops for library staff.
  28. Participates in library and other educational and professional associates on the local, regional, state, and national level.
  29. Participates at curriculum meetings.
  30. Conducts in-service workshops to support the instructional needs of the teachers.
  31. Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new media the library acquires.
  32. Arranges for interlibrary loan of media of interest or use to teachers.
  33. Provides for regular scheduled on-going library media use for all grades, k-12.
  34. Works with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of library resources.
  35. Provides library media orientation to students and staff members.
  36. Provides a sequential program of instruction in library skills in cooperation with the teaching staff to make the students independent users of the library.
  37. Presents and discusses media with a class studying a particular topic, on the invitation of a teacher.
  38. Promotes appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.
  39. Maintains a proper student discipline.
  40. Assists individual students in locating reference materials and other library media
  41. Assists students in making proper use of library media.
  42. Arouses students’ interest in books and other media through planned activities such as book fairs, book talks, using the Readers Guide and other indexes.
  43. Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
  44. Counsels with and gives reading guidance to students who have special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.
  45. Provides reading, viewing, and listening guidance for students.
  46. Trains and supervises student media assistants in the performance of their duties as directed by the library staff.
  47. Performs and supervises other tasks that are required for the operation and maintenance of the library.
