General Function:

 

Provide ongoing professional support for beginning teachers to maximize retention, improve classroom delivery of content instruction and ultimately affect student performance.

 

 

Education/Training/Experience:

 

Minimum: Valid New Mexico Level III Teacher’s License.  Five years teaching experience.  Valid New Mexico Driver’s License.

Preferred: Master’s degree in Education Administration or directly related field.  Ten years teaching experience and 2 years Administrative experience.

 

 

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of elementary and secondary best instructional practices. Knowledge of the educational process gained through directly related experience and education.  Ability to form and maintain good working relationships with teachers and administrators throughout the district.  Ability to make autonomous and independent decisions within a framework of broadly stated policy guidelines, precedents, specialized knowledge and prior research.  Demonstrated organizational, communication, management and interpersonal skills required to achieve the goals of the positions.

 

 

Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to):

Standard office equipment. Basic Office Computer program abilities. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher)

 

 

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

 

Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; communicate verbally and electronically; reach with hands and arms; stand and move throughout the building and/or to other facilities, and drive. Occasionally required to lift and/or exert force of up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Environmental Conditions:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Travel to facilities throughout the district is integral to the job.  

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

There are two components to the Espanola Public Schools Beginning Teacher Mentoring Program: direct mentoring of beginning teachers in their classrooms, and professional instruction over the course of the school year.

 

All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization.  Current essential functions include the following:

 

  1. Provide support and technical assistance to beginning teachers.
  2. Observe and provide feedback to beginning teachers using the NM PED Teaching Domains.
  3. Model effective teaching techniques for beginning teachers.
  4. Make (minimally) two on-site contacts per month with beginning teachers to observe and discuss their progress and needs. Document all contacts/interactions and observations and maintain records of both.
  5. Create and implement a “mentoring circles” program for beginning teachers. Based on a needs assessment, provide four two-hour sessions on topics the teachers indicate they are struggling with (i.e., classroom management, standards based instruction, RtI, etc.)
  6. Prior to the start of each school year, plan and facilitate a New Teacher Orientation for beginning teachers. Provide phone and e-mail support as necessary.
  7. Interface with Curriculum and Instruction to ensure support and professional development opportunities for new teachers.
  8. Maintain ongoing communication with school leadership.
  9. Provide support and obtain Human Resources’ expertise for Principals when they need to document performance issues of their staff.
  10. Keep abreast of best practices and disseminate information as appropriate to beginning teachers.
  11. Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain skills and expertise.
  12. Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned.

  2. Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
  3. Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
  4. Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
  5. Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/special application,
  6. Protects the District’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
  7. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
