General Job Function:   Develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program based on the four program components of the ASCA model, to address the academic, career, personal, and social development needs of all students.  

 

Education/Training/Experience

Minimum:   School Counselor license issued by NMPED

 

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:  Knowledge of elementary and secondary best counseling practices.  Ability to form and maintain good working relationships with teachers, administrators and families.  Ability to make autonomous and independent decisions within a framework of broadly stated policy guidelines, precedents, specialized knowledge and prior research.  Demonstrated organization, communication, management, and interpersonal skills required to achieve the goals of the position.

 

Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to): 

Standard office equipment.  Basic Office Computer program abilities. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher)

 

Physical/Cognitive Requirements

Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; communicate verbally and electronically; reach with hands and arms; stand and move throughout the building and/or to other facilities, and drive.  Occasionally required to lift and/or exert force of up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Environmental Conditions

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Travel to facilities throughout the district is integral to the job.  

 

Essential Job Functions:  Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable                                                                                                       accommodation:

 

  • Coordinate the delivery of a needs assessment for the counseling program and evaluate the counseling program               for continuous improvement.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program driven by student data and based on academic, career and personal/social development, to promote and enhance the learning process for all                 students (based on 6.63.6 NMSA; school counselor competencies).
  • Develop a school wide implementation plan based on the four program components of the ASCA model:
  1. Foundation (program focus, student competencies, & professional competencies)
  2. Management (assessments & tools)
  3. Delivery (direct and  indirect student services)
  4. Accountability (data analysis, program results, evaluation and improvement)

                Share the plan with principal(s) and staff, implement the plan and keep principal(s) and staff abreast of progress.

  • Provide short-term individual and group counseling opportunities for students to promote school success, personal growth, self-understanding, communication, problem solving, and decision making skills.
  • Assists families by providing referrals to outside agencies for students with acute or chronic mental health needs.
  • Orient students and parents regarding current and future educational goals and career objectives.
  • Assist in curriculum development and implementation (where appropriate), professional development and identification of interventions to assist students.
  • Consults with administration, staff and parents regarding students’ academic, career, social, emotional, & behavioral needs.
  • Serves on the school health/wellness/mental health team.
  • Calculate student progress toward successful completion of educational program at school (high school).
  • Regularly attends EPS district counseling meetings to keep current on policies, procedures and best practices regarding school counseling programs and issues.
  • Serve on the team that facilitates the development of the school/community social and health assessment as a required component of the state accreditation process as needed

 

Personal Accountability:

  1. Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
  2. Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
  3. Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
  4. Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
  5. Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/special application,
  6. Protects the District’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
  7. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
