Description

Transport students to and from school on established routes. Additional extracurricular runs, educational field trips, athletic events and/or other related activities may be available. Typical runs are morning and afternoon.

Education Training/Experience

Minimum: Must be Eighteen years of age. Must be able to obtain and maintain a license (with a "P" and "S" endorsements) and adhere to requirements as outlined in #6.41.4 NMAC

Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent. Commercial driving license. Bilingual, Spanish/English. Ideal candidate must love bad knock-knock jokes, appreciate broken science fair projects and have the ability to help kids with band instruments that are twice their size.

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

Ability to read and write and understand basic verbal and written communication. Ability to communicate effectively with others using the spoken word. Must have the ability to take care of student, parent and school needs while following District procedures. Must have the ability to maintain effective pupil behavior management, and if needed, in accordance with student's IEP. Ability to maintain a cheerful and calm demeanor at all times. This position requires drug and alcohol testing as detailed in the DOT regulations.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Climbing: Getting on and off bus to assist challenged riders. Walk to the vehicle in parking lot, walk in aisles on board bus, walk around bus for inspection. Pushing: Closing door, pushing wheelchairs, opening emergency door. Reaching: Opening and closing the door. Repetitive Motions: Turning the steering wheel, shifting the transmission. Sitting: Driving the vehicle, attending meetings. Talking: talking with passengers, talking on the radio. Seeing: keeping aware of general traffic conditions, stopped vehicles, traffic signals, viewing color of traffic lights, inspecting vehicle, monitoring passengers. Hearing Listening to traffic sounds, for emergency vehicles, passenger inquiries, monitor the radio, detect mechanical problems. Standing: Operating lift controls. Stooping/Stretching: Picking up and securing young or challenged passengers, securing wheelchair, inspecting under bus. Lifting: Handling challenged passengers into their seats, wheel chairs, tire chains and securing devices. On occasion may include dealing with mentally challenged children and adults, dealing with life-threatening emergencies, as well as coping with screaming children

Environmental Conditions:

Conditions include operating in inclement weather, heat and cold (buses are not air-conditioned), and exposure to possible injury due to traffic accidents.

Essential Job Functions

All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential functions include the following:

  1. Operates a school bus on an assigned route in transporting children to and from school, as well as related activities, in a safe, timely manner.
  2. Maintains, reads and understands route sheets including time changes and notifies supervisor or dispatcher immediately of any deviations.
  3. Exercises student management through correct use of communication and discipline and reports discipline problems through Transportation and local school district procedures.
  4. Properly cares for vehicle and its component parts as prescribed by the company to minimize wear and to extend its useful life
  5. Operates the bus two-way radio correctly and according to district policy.
  6. Inspects each vehicle before and after each trip using the correct procedure and completes the pre- and post-trip inspection form.
  7. Operates the vehicle and stops to allow passengers to board and disembark using safe and responsible procedures.
  8. (Special Education Drivers) Operates adaptive transportation equipment to board and discharge challenged passengers using safe and responsible procedures.
  9. Keeps bus clean and orderly with daily cleaning after each route operated as well as check for lost items.
  10. Fuels bus in accordance with transportation standards.
  11. Controls emergency situations according to District procedures
  12. Completes bus evacuation drill to District and Government standards.
  13. Completes and turns in all required documentation to the Transportation Dept. in a timely and accurate manner.
  14. Attend all required in-service training, as well as any other required meetings.
  15. Complies with all contractual obligations as well as all local, state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the vehicle.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned

  1. Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
  2. Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
  3. Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
  4. Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
  5. Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/special application,
  6. Protects the District's resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
  7. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
